Scotland’s New £14 Million Future Farming Investment Scheme

The Scottish Government is giving 100% grants to farmers to help improve biodiversity

Why are Scottish farmers excited?

Scottish growers and crofters can now access up to 100 percent capital grants (capped at £20,000) via the Future Farm Investment Scheme (FFIS). Funds are paid up-front—before you part with a penny—so you can invest in nature-positive equipment and infrastructure without cash-flow headaches.

Key Features of FFIS

  1. Up-Front Funding: Grant payment lands in your account once you accept the offer, easing cash flow pressures.
  2. Mix and match: A slurry injector alongside a pollinator strip, for example
  3. Targeted Outcomes: Every purchase must deliver at least one of four outcomes:
    • Improve farm efficiency
    • Cut greenhouse-gas emissions
    • Boost nature and biodiversity
    • Build climate resilience

Why Biodiversity Makes Business Sense

  • Fragile Systems: Habitat loss and climate pressure lead to poorer soils, fewer pollinators and rising pest pressure.
  • Rising Input Costs: Healthy on-farm ecosystems naturally suppress pests and improve soil structure—cutting long-term costs.
  • Barrier Removed: FFIS covers everything from hedgerow restoration and farm ponds to precision spreaders, as long as each item meets a scheme objective.

Who Can Apply?

Eligible:

  • Active farmers or crofters in Scotland
  • Submitted a 2025 Single Application Form by 15 May
  • At least two Whole Farm Plan audits declared (or completed by claim stage if not receiving the Basic Payment Scheme)

Excluded:

  • Contractor-only businesses
  • Equine enterprises
  • Public bodies
  • Common-grazing committees

How FFIS Aligns with Scotland’s Targets

Policy Goal FFIS Contribution
Net-zero by 2045 Low-emission slurry applicators, variable-rate spreaders, renewable-ready infrastructure
Halt & reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 Priority on habitat creation, connection & enhancement across the farmed landscape
Climate-resilient food system Water-harvesting kits, upgraded drainage, drought-tolerant forage trials

One capital investment often ticks multiple policy boxes—carbon sequestration, water management and biodiversity gains all in one.

Supported Capital Items

Your purchase must deliver at least one of these outcomes:

Boost Environmental Health

  • Shelter-belts, pollinator corridors, riparian buffers

Cut Greenhouse-Gas Emissions

  • Covered slurry stores, low-carbon fertilisers

Enhance Business Efficiency

  • Electronic weighing systems, solar water pumps

Adapt to Climate Change

  • On-farm reservoirs, improved drainage, drought-resistant swards

Full A-to-Z list available in the official scheme guidance.

Blending FFIS with Other Support

FFIS complements existing schemes—just don’t claim the same item twice:

  • Agri-Environment Climate Scheme (AECS): Continue habitat-management payments and use FFIS for precision kit.
  • Crofting Agricultural Grant Scheme (CAGS): If you’ve used CAGS on fencing, target pollinator strips or wetland scrapes with FFIS.

Five-Step Action Plan

  1. Audit Needs: Match on-farm priorities to the four FFIS outcomes.
  2. Price—but Don’t Purchase: Pre-ordering makes you ineligible.
  3. Apply: Log in to Rural Payments & Services, complete and submit before 22 August.
  4. Accept Offer: Within 14 days—grant funds should hit your account within 30 working days.
  5. Deliver & Evidence: Install your kit within nine months and upload invoices, bank statements and geo-tagged photos.

Example Project: Real-Time Bird Monitoring

Item: Section F – Farm bird monitoring equipment (e.g. song meter acoustic detector)

How It Works:

  • Deploy at key locations on your farm
  • Plug in solar panel for indefinite use, no need to bring in!
  • Chirple automatically identifies birdsong and logs them for you
  • Data reveals habitat hotspots—guiding targeted wildflower planting and scrub-corridor restoration
  • Pre- and post-installation comparisons verify biodiversity gains and support eco-certification
